In theory, just about every marketing campaign could be considered a niche strategy. After all, even a Super Bowl ad, which could be viewed by 100 million people, is still going after only one segment of the population: people who watch the Super Bowl. In practice, though, niche marketing is about defining categories of people that your business can appeal to, and defining them as narrowly as possible.
Niche marketing is a business strategy that targets small, well-defined segments of the population rather than the population as a whole. The philosophy is that while your business can't be all things to all people--and it shouldn't even try to be--you can dominate one segment of the market if you understand it well enough and appeal to it in a manner that resonates with its members.
The biggest advantage of niche marketing is its cost-effectiveness. Say you sell skateboards. You could put up billboards all over town and advertise all day on all the local TV stations, and your message would probably reach a lot of people who might be interested in buying a skateboard. But it would be enormously expensive, because you'd also be paying to reach a lot of people who have no interest whatsoever. A niche strategy would focus your marketing dollars in the places where you're most likely to find customers. You could buy ads in high school papers, or put up posters at concerts that appeal to young people, or run ads during "action sports" broadcasts on TV. Doing these things will cost less money, and they will reach fewer people--but a high percentage of the people you reach will be in your target market.
An example of a niche market is women over the age of 60 who have a median household income of $65,000 and like to give baskets as gifts to their family and friends.
Your target market represents the core group of consumers for whom your business works to create products and services. Your marketing and promotional efforts should be tailored to reach these individuals in media that they frequent, whether it's via television, the web, print, radio or mobile advertising.
Your target market can be identified by their sex, age, income, marital status, educational level, whether they rent or buy their homes and even by their professions.
One of the most popular forms of niche marketing is pay-per-click marketing. With this type of marketing strategy, you work with a search engine such as Google or Yahoo!. You can set up a marketing campaign that is based around related search terms. When someone types in one of your keywords into the search engine, your ad can be displayed on the side of the page. When someone clicks on the ad, you will be charged for the click. With this type of marketing, you can focus in on people who are looking for your products and services. You only pay when someone looks at your website instead of paying for ineffective marketing efforts.
Niche marketing is a type of promotion that involves focusing in on a very narrow segment of the market. With this type of marketing, a business decides to select a target market and promote their products or services to them. This type of marketing can help you stay away from highly competitive areas and save money on marketing.
