Wind power is a way to help free yourself in the electricity grid and the bills that go with it. Although large wind generators with the type used by electricity companies are complex units, the basic principle is simple: using the energy with the wind to turn a shaft. A simple generator is usually built out of common household components with the tools found in any type of workshop. While this won't produce enough capacity to take your home up from the grid entirely, it is a start out.

Guidance

Prepare a Generator and Hub

Locate an old immediate current (DC) motor to use as a generator. A DC motor is actually a generator running backwards; both have spinning coils of wire surrounded by magnets. Current coming into that motor induces motion inside shaft; applying force to that shaft will induce current inside wire. This process is called electromagnetic induction. Wind generator builders prefer to use old DC power generators from computer tape drives for the, although they are now difficult to find. Any DC motor work. Online auctions and consumer electronics salvage shops are where to look.

Measure the diameter in the generator shaft.

Fit your drill press which has a bit matching the length of the shaft and drill a hole through the center of a metal disk. This will be your hub for the wind turbine's blades.

Drill three pairs involving small holes, evenly spaced around the circumference with the hub disk. The blades will attach to these.
Build and Mount that Blades

Cut a 2-foot long piece of plastic pipe lengthwise inside quarters, with each resulting department being 2 feet much time, with 1/4 of the circumference with the original pipe. A band saw is a good tool for this.

Draw a line across each piece which has a pencil. The line should get started at one corner with the piece and travel along the long axis of the blade to your point about halfway the other short side.

Slice along the line using your band saw. This will create four curved and tapering knives, one of which it is possible to keep as a sacrifice.

Drill a pair of holes inside wide end of every different blade, sized and spaced to match the holes drilled with the hub.

Bolt three of the blades to the hub by passing six bolts with the three pairs of cry and securing them with nuts tightened using a wrench.
Mounting the Hub and the Generator

Slide the hub into the generator shaft while using the hole you drilled in the heart of it. Secure it into position by screwing a nut onto the final of the shaft.

Mount the generator and blade assembly on one end of a 3-foot part of 2 by 4 wood. To do this, wrap metal straps tightly in the generator and screw their ends down into the wood.

Attach a weather vane. A piece of aluminum sheeting screwed onto other end of the some by 4 will catch the wind and switch the generator to seize it. You can cut a piece to it with shears or maybe a carbide blade on ones own band saw. To attach it, use your drill press to drill holes in the aluminum, then secure it on the wood with screws. The sheeting should be attached to be a shark fin, with its thin edge parallel to the the top 2 by 4.

Locate the point along the length of the 2 by 4 the location where the weight of the generator on one side and the lumber and weather vane on the other are balanced. This is the spot around which your power generator can pivot.

Screw a pipe fitting onto the bottom of the 2 by 4 at the pivot point, then drill a vertical hole in the wood to match along with the hollow center of that pipe fitting. This will create a channel to your wires from the generator.

Screw a 10-inch long threaded piece of pipe into the installation. This can be greased and slipped into another pipe to serve as a bearing to allow the generator to show freely.
Place Your Generator

Mount a pipe which has a diameter slightly larger then the pipe attached to your generator within a windy spot. It will need to be secured, either by burying the lower third of the pipe in the ground or by bolting it aside of the building or tower it is attached to. You will need access to the bottom of the pipe once it can be installed, which might mean digging a trench to it.

Spread grease on the 10-inch piece of pipe attached to your wind mill; then set it on to the larger pipe. The wires from the generator will undergo the 10-inch pipe and on the bigger one; you can then pull them out underneath of the mounting tube.

Connect the generator wires to your charge controller, a battery and the second load. The controller will route power to the battery until it's full and then divert the charge to another load (say for example fan or heater) and avoid damaging the battery. These controllers are relatively simple. You could build your according to diagrams offered online or order some sort of pre-made controller from an electronics supplier.
