GE: Tempered fridge glass shelf explosion

14 Apr.,2023

So, I have a GE French door refrigerator. Less than 2 years old, it already has a multitude of cracked and broken plastic parts, i.e. vegetable bins, runners, shelf attachments.

The latest incident happened two days ago. I figure it's time to clean my fridge. So I remove the vegetable bins, including the frame with large glass shelf that to which they attach, putting everything on my counter. About 15-20 minutes later, after I've emptied my fridge and wiped down the inside, I turn my attention to the frame with shelf, which is too big to fit in my sink. It's pretty clean, so I just use a slightly damp sponge with green cleaner, and as soon as I touch the glass, the shelf literally explodes. Thousands of small glass crystals are flying all over the place, at least 10 feet. Several hit my hand and legs, causing small cuts, all while the glass keeps on crackling and flying.

After I clean up myself and my kitchen, I call GE. Well, they've never ever heard of anything like that! Uh, too bad, there are dozens of reports of tempered glass explosions for no apparent reasons. And, no, I didn't put an ice cold glass shelf in piping hot water or drop the shelf.

Anyways, she offers to send me a new glass shelf, which by the way, is currently on back order, but it'll take 24 business hours (read 3 days) to find out when it'll be available.

The moral: Don't clean your glass shelves, and if you do, wear safety goggles and protective gear. Apparently, if you google, the same can happen with with glass sinks or glass furniture and even shelves inside the fridge. Pretty scary.

Apparently, there can be small defects in the glass which cause it to explode for no apparent reason.
