CRISIS IN THE NITRILE GLOVE MARKET

In 2020, demand for Nitrile disposable gloves (PPE) is overwhelming supply, creating a

critical worldwide shortage

.

The global spread of the Chinese innovel coronavirus (COVID-19) has completely taken over the conversation—and the market.

To complicate matters even further, Nitrile gloves are being mandated to be worn by almost our entire workforce.

To meet this unprecedented demand for Nitrile gloves, manufacturers are struggling with shortages of raw materials, labor and on who gets priority access to PPE.

Experts say these circumstances are expected continue for months and even years ahead.

Malaysia is by far the world’s largest Nitrile glove supplier

, producing as many as three out of four Nitrile gloves in the global market.

The Malaysian government ordered factories to halt all manufacturing starting in March because of the pandemic. Then, one by one, those that make products deemed essential, including Nitrile gloves, have been required to seek exemptions to reopen, but only with half of their workforce to reduce the risk of transmitting the new virus.

Malaysia's Nitrile glove factories, which make most of the world's critical PPE Nitrile gloves, were operating at half capacity just when they were most needed.

Beginning in

August of 2019 China bought 100% of all Malaysian Nitrile glove production creating even greater shortages worldwide.

In February when the new virus’s death toll surpassed that of 2003’s SARS outbreak, Nitrile glove orders increased by 100% compared with the usual weekly orders. With the doubling of orders in February it meant they had to make roughly 5.8 billion more gloves just to meet February’s additional demand. As a result usual lead time of 30–40 days has stretched to

120 days till delivery

. Malaysian glove makers are currently operating at 100% capacity, and have a four-month order backlog.

Today Malaysian factories are auctioning their production to the highest bidder on an order by order basis, resulting in escalating prices!

These circumstances have created chaos and turmoil to the Nitrile glove market.
