Street lights on your drive home from work and within your neighborhood are getting brighter, and more environmentally sound.  Xcel Energy has been converting old high pressure sodium cobra head street lights, that are common through the Grand Valley, into LED lights.

“It’s been years worth of research and investigating new technologies look at how we can provide good and consistent, reliable, street lighting,” said Kelly Flenniken, Xcel’s Western Slope Area Manager.

The entire state of Colorado will be going through the change as the Western Slope was the first region of the state to go through these conversions.  When the process is complete, Xcel will have changed approximately 6,000 lights just in the Grand Valley.

“It’s a good and really directionally focused light so we’re really lighting the area’s of the street and sidewalk that we want to have lit,” said Flenniken.

LED lights are known for not using as much energy and last years longer than the bulbs they are replacing.

“We think the communities will be real happy with this when it’s all complete,” said Flenniken.

Xcel expects this change will decrease cities light bills by 5 to 7 percent monthly.  Xcel expects to have all the high pressure sodium cobra head’s by the end of January.
