Safety Operating Procedures for Electroplating Equipment

1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements

  • Essential Gear:

    • Chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile/neoprene)

    • Splash-proof goggles or face shield

    • Acid/alkali-resistant apron or full-body suit

    • Steel-toe rubber boots

  • Respiratory Protection:

    • Use NIOSH-approved respirators when handling toxic fumes (e.g., cyanide, chromic acid)

    • Ensure proper ventilation (minimum 100 CFM airflow)

2. Pre-Operation Checks

  • Equipment Inspection:

    • Verify intact tank linings and leak-free plumbing

    • Confirm emergency shower/eyewash functionality

    • Check rectifier grounding (resistance <1 ohm)

  • Chemical Preparation:

    • Always add acids to water (never reverse)

    • Label all secondary containers with contents and hazards

3. Operational Safety Protocols

  • Electrical Safety:

    • De-energize equipment before servicing (Lockout/Tagout)

    • Maintain 36" clearance around rectifiers

  • Process Controls:

    • Never exceed 80% of tank rated capacity

    • Maintain solution temperatures below 50°C (122°F) unless specified

4. Hazard-Specific Precautions

  • Cyanide Baths:

    • Store separately from acids (minimum 10ft distance)

    • Implement cyanide antidote kit (amyl nitrite) in work area

  • Hexavalent Chrome:

    • Install local exhaust ventilation (0.5m/s capture velocity)

    • Conduct quarterly urine biomonitoring for workers

5. Emergency Response

  • Chemical Spills:

    • Neutralize acids with sodium bicarbonate, bases with citric acid

    • Use spill kits with pH-neutralizing polymers

  • First Aid Measures:

    • Skin contact: Flush 15 minutes (tepid water, 20-37°C)

    • Eye exposure: Irrigate using ANSI-compliant eyewash for 20 minutes

6. Post-Operation Procedures

  • Waste Management:

    • Segregate acid/alkali wastes for neutralization

    • Label hazardous waste per EPA/DOT regulations

  • Housekeeping:

    • Conduct lead wipe tests (surfaces <10μg/ft²)

    • Implement 5S methodology for tool organization

Note: All personnel must complete annual 8-hour HAZWOPER training with hands-on drills.
