I need to check some existing trusses supporting a belt conveyor.
I assume that the static vertical load would be factored to allow for some dynamic effects from the belt. Can anyone advise on typical dynamic factors?
Secondly, are there any significant longitudinal forces on the supporting structure due to the belt that should be considered?

Thanks, John

You'll need to find a copy of the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturer's Association (CEMA) publication "Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials". It should have what you need to know.

OK, thanks, I'll check our library.

One longitudinal force that can be quite significant is the belt tension loads.  Whether or not this gets transferred to the support structure (truss in this case) is dependent upon the end supports.

I designed a belt conveyor structure recently that had belt tension loads T1 and T2 of 60 kips each during normal operation and nearly twice that during motor startup.  This produced significant loads on the supporting structure.

Thanks
I haven't yet started the analysis but I understand that the belt tension loads are taken by the towers at the ends in my case.
I was wondering if there are other longitudinal forces due to the belt running.
I have located the CEMA publication in one of our libraries so I'll look through that once it arrives.
