LINCOLN (25 News Now) - Lightning struck the guard tower at Logan County Correctional Center in Lincoln igniting a fire there as storms pounded parts of Central Illinois Monday morning.
Prison staffers safely evacuated the tower even as flames tore through the roof about 9:50 a.m., according to a post on the Lincoln Rural Fire Protection District Facebook page.
Fire crews used the ladder truck to pour water on the burning structure. Firefighters said they used a hand line to extinguish hot spots.
No one was hurt.
Lincoln Rural and Lincoln City firefighters were aided by crews from Atlanta, Mt. Pulaski, Middletown, Elkhart, and the Logan County Paramedic Association.
