There are various materials for T-shirt fabric. One of the most popular materials is cotton, and the second is polyester. The rest is blended fabric or modified cotton fabric. Each material has both advantages and disadvantages. That depends on your purpose and preference. The following will show you how to choose T-shirt fabric from two aspects: Material and Purpose.

Which Material is Best for T-shirt Fabric?

Cotton Spandex T-shirt Fabric

There are various materials for. One of the most popular materials is, and the second is. The rest is blended fabric or modified cotton fabric. Each material has both advantages and disadvantages. That depends on your purpose and preference. The following will show you how to choose T-shirt fabric from two aspects:

Most of the T-shirt fabrics are 5% spandex blended. That is to increase the elasticity and durability. Cotton spandex gives the T-shirt fabric the best comfort, and is friendly to sensitive skin. And it’s cost-effective for consumers. However, it also has shortcomings like wrinkling easily and sticking to the body when sweating. So it’s not very suitable for formal wear or easy-to-sweat constitution. While causal wear or standard constitution is ok.

Polyester Spandex T-shirt Fabric

Among synthetic fibers, polyester is the most popular material for T-shirts. Not only do you know it’s in a good price, but also it’s in a good performance. It avoids problems of cotton such as wrinkling and shrinking. Polyester spandex for T-shirts performs well in hold shape and is sweat-wicking. When it comes to polyester’s shortcoming, the most obvious is dyeing difficulty. Dye molecules are not easy to enter the fiber. And the dyed fabric color is not as bright as you expect. But hard-to-dye polyester enables the fabric to be high color fastness with disperse dyes.

Let me emphasize that, polyester is more wrinkle-resistant and moisture-wicking than cotton. While cotton is soft and more comfortable than polyester. For causal T-shirts, cotton is a totally good material. For durable T-shirts, polyester is the better choice.

Rayon Spandex T-shirt Fabric

Rayon has a similar appearance to cotton but a better look than cotton. It looks brighter and smoother than cotton. Also, rayon is better at absorption and dyeing. The hand feel is as soft as cotton. Since rayon is an artificial fiber, it costs less than natural fiber. Although rayon can be a substitute for cotton, it still has drawbacks that will influence your choice. Honestly, rayon spandex fabric will be less stretchy and colorful after washing many times. The colors will fade away if washed often. If you are used to washing by hand, that’s better for it.

Bamboo Spandex Fabric for T-shirt

Bamboo fabric is a perfect choice for summer wear. It brings you a cool feeling and keeps you with comfort. Also, it’s No.1 in wicking and drying among most of the fibers. Bamboo is called “Breathing Fiber”. Wearing a bamboo spandex T-shirt enables you to stay cool the whole summer. Another notable feature of bamboo is not very stretchable. Not Stretchable≠Not stretchy. It means bamboo is lower in strength. It’s easy to tear or wear out if you wash it heavily. The only thing you do is to take care of it when wearing and washing.

Nylon Spandex Fabric for T-shirt

The best feature of nylon is abrasion-resistant. It’s outstanding in bursting strength among the textile fibers. The natural cool feeling of nylon makes itself popular for ice-feeling T-shirts. And it’s not next to your skin, which increases airflow. Also, the smooth surface makes it drape well and wrinkle resistant. Some nylon spandex fabric for T-shirt also has the ability of sun protection, which is versatile for both T-shirts and arm sleeves. However, it takes time for you to remove the stain of nylon spandex T-shirts, especially ice-feeling T-shirts. The best solution is to wash it as soon as possible.

That’s not all…

Besides spandex blend fabric for T-shirts, there is another critical fabric for it which is no spandex blended. That is 100% polyester, playing an important role in T-shirt fabric. The following are the main features of

100% Polyester Fabric for T-shirt

  • Strong and durable without ironing
  • Naturally better UV resistant
  • Anti-mold and moth-eaten
  • Easy to static and pilling
  • It is worth saying that 100% polyester fabric is good for sublimation printing. It will achieve more vivid images than 100% cotton. And it will keep effect even washing frequently. With 100% polyester fabric, you can make T-shirts with solid print. Thus allowing you long-lasting use.

    Not the end…

    RPET Fabric for T-shirt

RPET fabric is also called recycled polyester fabric. It comes from recycled plastic. Through processing, the recycled bottle turned into recycled polyester yarn. Thus knitting recycled polyester fabric. It reduces waste pollution and protects the environment. Also, it saves the oil which is the resource of polyester. RPET fabric is also called sustainable fabric. It is popular in America and Europe. Many of our customers choose recycled polyester fabric for T-shirts. Not only because it’s eco-friendly, but also because it’s almost the same property as virgin polyester. Strong, elastic, non-wrinkle, durable, etc. More than polyester, RPET works for the circular economy.

    The best part?

How to Choose T-shirt fabric for Different Purposes?

    For Different Fit

If you make tight-fitting T-shirts, spandex blended knitted fabric will your best choice. It enhances the elasticity and recovery of T-shirts, better fits the body, and improves comfort. Not only builds body shape but also enables comfortable wear. While for casual T-shirts, 100% polyester or 100% cotton is just ok. Both are common for T-shirts and bring a boxy look. The obvious difference is that polyester touches stiffer than cotton. That depends on your skin preference. After all, they are the T-shirt’s main material. While for necklines, you can choose elastic fabrics to not loosen or deform.

    For Cuff and Neckline

Generally, the cuff and neckline of T-shirts are rib-knit fabric. Not only for good elasticity but also to keep the shape. So rib fabric is not easy to crumple up or change. Also, it has no sense of restraint. No matter for the cuff or neckline, it never feels too tight or too loose. So rib-knit fabric will bring T-shirt accessories comfortable wear. By the way, please understand that rib fabric made of synthetic fiber like polyester will pilling after washing much too often. That’s normal, And the rib-knit fabric is cost-effective. It is often made of cotton or polyester. Either is a common material and not too costly.

    To Keep Warm

There are different types of T-shirts. Half sleeve, long sleeve, sleeveless… As the name suggests, different style stands for different application. For example, long sleeve T-shirt is warmer than half sleeve style. If for autumn or winter, the plain fabric is less warm than brushed fabric. While the brushed fabric is not as warm as fleece fabric. So fleece fabric is the best T-shirt fabric for keeping warm. Brushed fabric is versatile for both half sleeve and long sleeve. If you are a T-shirt manufacturer, the brushed fabric will be multi-purpose for you. If you professionally produce autumn or winter T-shirt, and your purpose is to keep warm, maybe fleece fabric is especially for you.

    For Different Seasons

As we described above, fleece fabric is better for cold weather. Besides appearance, another key point is the weight of the fabric. As we all know, the garments of winter are heavier and thicker so that they can effectively make you feel warm. So we advise you to choose 260-320gsm fabric for your winter T-shirt. While for warmer weather, you can consider 180gsm. It is a common weight for T-shirts. But it will be a bit see-through, especially for the white Tee. So we suggest heavier weight between 230gsm and 270gsm. What’s more, the lightweight fabric will be easier to deform. At the same time, the heavyweight fabric keeps shape for a long-time.

    Stiff or Soft?

That depends on the yarn count. The higher the yarn count, the softer the fabric. Fabric with a high denier(unit of yarn count according to length) requires the raw material to be better. Otherwise, the yarn will break when knitting. Usually, the yarn count of T-shirt fabric is from 21-46S(unit according to weight). The yarn count determines the fabric density. The more yarn count, the thinner the fabric. Like the 40s, the fabric is ultra-soft and comfortable. We also call it microfiber fabric. For T-shirt fabric, that’s fantastic! And of course, you can choose a lower yarn count to achieve a stiff feeling and crisp look. It usually costs less than high yarn count fabric.

As far as I’m concerned, when choosing T-shirt fabric, there are two main points you can consider: material and application. For material, do you tend to natural fiber or synthetic fiber? What quality do you need for your T-shirt? For application, form-fitting or loose-fitting? Lightweight or heavyweight? Need to be warm or not.
