The clutch system in your semi-truck controls the power from the engine to the transmission. There’s also the clutch brake that’s designed to stop the transmission input shaft from rotating. This mechanism lines up the transmission and gears properly, putting the transmission into gear when the truck is at a standstill.
The main part of the clutch system consists of a disc that has been coated with a high friction material, on both sides. This disc sits on the flywheel. External force from the pressure plate presses against the clutch disc which will also turn with the flywheel due to frictional force. The input shaft of the transmission is connected to the disc. That way, when external force is applied to the disc, the engine power will get transmitted to the transmission system.
For disengagement purposes a special kind of spring that sits between the pressure plate and the cover is introduced, known as the diaphragm spring. When you press the clutch pedal, a hydraulic system transfers the clutch motion to the center of the diaphragm spring. When the diaphragm spring is pressed, the power flow is shut off. It’s during this time that you can make a gear change. The clutch pedal is released, and the power flow continues again.
When you are driving a semi-truck, it’s necessary that you double clutch when shifting gears. To do this, you will engage the clutch to pull the gear out, letting the clutch out. After that, you will engage it again to shift into the desired gear. It’s important to remember that when double clutching, you don't want to dump the clutch all at once.
While it may seem like the only function of the clutch is to get you through the gears in your truck, they actually serve a few functions. The functions of a clutch include:
1. Transmission of torque from the engine to the drivetrain.
2. Deliver power from the engine to enable smooth movement.
3. Protection of the drivetrain.
