The right way to store wine at home

05 Jul.,2023

When preserved correctly, wine can last for decades, growing in quality and value. But even the most luxurious of spirits can be ruined by poor storage. Unfortunately, not all of us have personal cellars on hand, so it’s important to know how to store your bottles properly until you’re ready to uncork them and enjoy a tipple. Make the most of your stash by following these rules:

A. Long-term Storage

Maintain The Right Temperature

Temperature is the most important factor that determines the quality of stored wine. “Wines don’t like high, very low or fluctuating temperatures as it results in loss of quality and character. Wine should ideally be stored between 10oC and 15oC, for which one needs a temperature-controlled cellar or wine cabinet. If that is not possible, one may store their bottles in cupboards or in spaces away from direct light and where there isn’t much heat or humidity,” says Sanket Gawand, the chief winemaker at Vallonné Vineyards.

A temperature-controlled environment is the key to proper wine storage

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Both sunlight and incandescent lighting can damage the quality of your wine. “Light adversely reacts with the phenolic content, i.e. the chemicals that influence what the wine tastes like, what colour it is and the general mouthfeel. UV light is also harmful as it causes wine to lose its flavour. That’s the reason dark-coloured bottles are used for wine. Store them in a dark place,” says Kiran Patil, the director of sales and marketing at Reveilo Wines.

Store Wine Bottles Horizontally

Corked wine bottles should be kept horizontally on a wine rack to maximize longevity. Resting them on their side helps keep the cork moist, which is the key for long-term storage, as a dried-out cork can cause seepage and premature aging. While it’s not necessary to store screw-top wine bottles horizontally, this method allows for efficient space utilization and easy access.
